Should You Insulate Your Water Pipes?

Serving Families Throughout Memphis
|

Are you looking for a way to save money on your utility bills but don’t have a ton of money to invest in your home? Insulating your pipes is easy, inexpensive, and can be done easily at nearly any time. Materials cost less than a dollar per foot, but this investment is returned quickly, many times over in savings over the life of the insulation.

Hot Water Pipes

The most obvious way insulation helps you save money is in your hot water pipes. By insulating your pipes, you can heat from escaping your water, which means you use less hot water to maintain the temperature you desire in your faucet, shower, or bathtub. Using less hot water means your water heater runs less frequently since it doesn’t have to refill nearly as often. This can save you a bundle, even hundreds of dollars over several years.

This also can add a few degrees to your household water by preventing it from cooling off on the way to your faucet. If you prefer hotter water, this lets you set your heater at a lower temperature, which also helps you save money. Warmer water for less money… what’s not to love?

Cold Water Pipes

If you’re already wrapping your hot water pipes, it’s usually worth it to invest the few extra dollars to do your cold ones as well. Cold water pipes don’t need to be insulated against heat loss, but there are still benefits to wrapping them in insulating material. If your pipes run through areas that are not climate-controlled, such as your attic, or an unfinished basement, your pipes could freeze risk freezing during the cold temperatures of winter. Frozen pipes can lead to some serious issues, including clogged drains, backed up pressure, bursting, and much more.

During the summer months, pipes that are exposed can actually pull heat from these areas into your home. Water in the pipes in these areas can absorb the heat, and then carry it throughout your home, heating the air around them and forcing you to have to run your HVAC system more often. It also can require you to run your tap for several seconds in order to flush out the hot water and get the desired cool temperature. Insulation can help reduce this effect and save you money on your water bill.
